A right-hand batsman, Jamie Smith made his one-day and Twenty20 debuts for South Australia in 2006-07 at the age of 18. He showed promise in his initial Ford Ranger Cup match against Victoria, scoring 27, and he made 15 and chipped in with a wicket in his Twenty20 appearance. Smith earned his first state rookie contract for 2007-08 and during the off-season he was also a standby for the Australia Under-19 tour of Malaysia.
