 Profile

South Australian paceman Mark Harrity has been consistently plagued by injury problems over the course of his career yet remains one of Australian domestic cricket's most dangerous bowlers. Fiery and wholehearted, the left armer is a passionate cricketer who bowls with tremendous speed and hostility. From a medium length run-up and slightly angular approach, Harrity's stock deliveries tend to be those which pitch just short of a driveable length and move back into right handers but he also bowls with disarming variety. It is common to see him swing the new ball both ways and to produce stinging yorkers which have the capacity to undo all but the most vigilant batsmen. A lethally destructive bowler when at his best, Harrity has cruelly been denied the opportunity to enjoy a prolonged run of success because of ongoing problems in warding off back injuries. His misfortune has also appeared to dent his confidence at times, making it difficult for him in recent years to command a regular berth alongside the likes of Jason Gillespie and Paul Wilson in the Redbacks' best attack. Better luck will almost certainly see him become a permanent strike bowler for the team. (John Polack, August 2001)
