Wade Townsend, a former state under-17 and under-19 batsman, has kept the rookie contract he received for 2007-08. Last summer he performed strongly in the Cricket Australia Cup, winning a nomination for the Academy batting programme, and spent the off-season scoring 10 hundreds in 18 games for Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire. A left-hander from the Norths club, Townsend's grandfather Leslie umpired the fifth Test of the 1958-59 Ashes series. When he is not playing cricket he works as a butcher and fish filleter.
