Bangladesh A v England A, Dhaka, 2nd day Patient Carberry puts England ahead February 23, 2007
England 268 for 6 (Carberry 70) lead Bangladesh 209 by 59 runs Michael Carberry's patient 70 helped England A build a useful lead on the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh A. He was the only batsman to pass fifty as others made starts but failed to build as the home side's bowlers plugged away. Will Jefferson and Nick Compton started in positive fashion, adding 57 for the first wicket in under 17 overs, but both fell in quick succession. Captain Michael Yardy steadied the innings before he was run out by Tushar Imran for 34 bringing Steven Davies, the Worcestershire wicketkeeper who's playing as a batsman, to the middle. He and Carberry carried the total beyond 200 over the next 30 overs with calm accumulation against the seamers and spinners. Bangladesh's pair of left-arm spinners, Enamul Haque and Mosharraf Hossain kept a tight leash on the scoring, ensuring England didn't race away, and the duo hauled their team back into the contest as three wickets fell for 19. Davies was caught behind off Hossain then Matt Prior, who has the gloves for this match, was trapped by Haque. Carberry's impressive 157-ball stay, to follow his century in the warm-up match, was ended when he sent a return catch back to Hossain and England were threatening to squander their hard work. However, the depth of the batting showed itself as Alex Loudon and Tim Bresnan added an unbeaten 48 until the close, building a lead of 59 which the lower order will aim to extend beyond three figures. © Cricinfo
