Hayden, Hussey to miss tour game for Champions League - IPL

Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey, Australia's key batsmen, will miss the pre-Test series practice match - if selected in the Test squad for the India tour - to instead play for Chennai Super Kings, their Indian Premier League team, in the Champions League, claimed IS Bindra, a member of the IPL governing council.

Bindra also confirmed the Champions League will be held in India during the 10-day window after the Champions Trophy, which ends in Lahore on September 28, and before the first Test between India and Australia starting October 9. Admitting this would lead to a clash with Australia's scheduled visit to India starting September 29, especially a tour game from October 2 to 5, Bindra told Cricinfo, "Hussey and Hayden, the two key players facing a clash of dates, will play for the Chennai team."

Chennai finished second behind Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, and both have qualified for the Champions League involving the top two Twenty20 teams from four countries.

However Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said the board was keen that international duties take precedence. "The IPL always agreed with that," Young told AAP. "The situation is moving very quickly and I don't think there will be any clarity until all the parties get together and work out what the dates are, and who's doing what, where and when. But there's too much uncertainty and we don't want to create expectations that might not be delivered."

Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has previously told Cricinfo that IPL franchises would get first priority over players for the Champions League but will have to pay a fee to the player's state team if both have qualified for the event. In the case of Hussey, who is caught between Western Australia and Chennai , Modi had said, that "Chennai has the option to keep him and pay a relieving fees to Western Australia".

Although Cricket Australia is finalising the rules for the Champions League, Bindra said it is likely to be a single-leg tournament spread over eight to nine days. Apparently, Mohali has emerged as a strong contender to stage the event as it is just a short flight away from Lahore where the Champions Trophy winds up.

This blowhard was wrong- Hussey and Hayden have both confirmed they'll be playing in the tour match.

If Lalit Modi is so confident about the IPL idea why the hell is he trying to put all defences against the ICL. What is wrong if ICL is making money and also giving some opportunity to players which would other wise be watching the IPL games on their TV. Looks like Lalit Modi has stuck gold in this business more than his own family business and leaving no stone unturned to showcase the brash and abrasive side of some of the BCCI stake holders! BTW did we all know that BCCI is actually is actually a private body?

Our much beloved world of cricket is slowly turning in to a farcical money fueled slogging commercial enterprise, where administrators control and dictate the game. Already we have seen IS Bindra, Modi, the ICC and co. muck up the game already and now to say that a few mindless Twenty20s will take priority over the most awaited Test Match of our time. This series against India could determine fate for the next few generations and for players like Hussey and Dhoni competing in the Champions league could threaten their Test abilities and preparation. What if they get injured while slogging? I personally will not see our beloved game turn to the dark side so often turned to by sports such as soccer and rugby. Save the game that we know and love, when we miss a match or didn't check the cricket scores what is the first thing we worry about, who won in the Twenty20 Chennai vs Raj or how many runs Ponting scored in the test? Exactly.

You guys made some valid points, the issue still being that, in cricket (and possibly even rugby?) unlike football the game revolves around the International Game! not the club game. Also tournaments like the IPL will only last around a month or so and then theres a gaping calendar. In football the tournament runs through out and stops for the summer when cricket kicks in. The problem here is that people should want to play for their country and then IPL (other tournaments?) on the side, not want to play solely for the IPL. Look at football, remember for the African cup of nations, so many guys didn't want to play for their countries because of problems with their 'paymasters'. Also if you say cricket is losing interest its because its never correctly marketed ICC and BCCi are saving every bit of money to feed the Indian Cricket team rather than helping grow the sport.

now they'll both be playing for australia! not their franchise, besides hayden said he would rather play for his australian team than with chennai super kings!

this is just not right, well how can we give so much of importance to 20/20, and put Test cricket at a loss. If anything any test match between Australia and India is worth much more than few 20/20 matches, cmon we are talking about test cricket, lets not sacrifice it for the sake of money. Just the thought of seeing Dhoni not preparing for the tests and being busy preparing for the 20/20 league before such a crucial test series is absurd.

i am ashamed as an indian on the way these people make such shameful claims and comments...i mean international cricket is the priority over club/county cricket..this is so commonsensical..also the comments like the IPL franchises would get first priority over players and the banning of the teams involving ICL players are ignominious to say the least..i don't understand wht they want to achieve...they r bringing cricket in india to disrepute...or more aptly put, they are harming cricket in general...i wonder is there no way of checking the tyrannical BCCI???

It's probably been said before but I've just got to say it again to emphasise the point: "Chennai...pay...relieving fees to Western Australia..." Come on, as if Modi isn't implying that financially weaker teams can be bought out of their assets! Yeah, you're right, cricket will end up being like the European Champions League...where you can have cricket's equivalent of Tom Hicks and George Gillett (Liverpool FC owners, if you didn't know) who know zilch about the very sporting code of the team they own. Football's a great sport, but it's an absolute sell-out. Just look at its culture. Hmmmm, integrity or greed?......

Firstly scheduling of Champions League in the narrow gap between Champions Trophy and Australia - India test series is unfortunate. I am already having nightmares knowing I.S. Bindra is now ICC's principal advisor. I admired him as BCCI president in early nineties but his priorities have clearly shifted now. Here is what I'll do, any player (Indian or Australian) selected for test series must prepare for this most exciting of test cricket contests in last decade or so. That means Dhoni should skip Champions League along with likes of Hayden and Hussy. None of the Rajasthan Royals is expected to be in test squads. Chennai, WA and some others might be hurt a bit but then its club cricket and that too of 20/20 format for sanity's sake.

How Can IS Bindra say that Hussey and Hayden will be palying Champions League when their first priority is that of the contracts they have with Cricket Aust. They will be required to be on NATIONAL Duty at that time meaning they can not be involved, as per we seen with the recent IPL when they had to come back to Aust for a pre-tour training camp. I damn well hope C.A tell BCCI to get stuffed and that the NATIONAL CONTRACTS take precedence over CLUB CONTRACTS.
