Profile
Jack Noreiga, who died in his native Trinidad on August 8 aged 67, carried a remarkable record with him to his grave. In spite of a career that began and ended in the same 1971 series against India and lasted four Tests, he remains the only West Indian to take nine wickets in a Test innings.
His 9 for 95 in the first innings of the second Test at the Queen's Park Oval, his home ground, secured Noreiga instant and lasting fame. Going on 35, Noreiga was little more than a reliable club offspinner when he was recalled into the Trinidad and Tobago team for the regional Shell Shield tournament that season, claiming 17 wickets in two matches and persuading the selectors to pick him for the first Test in Jamaica.... Of his 17 Test wickets, at an average of 29 runs each, 15 were at Queen's Park.
A jovial character who rarely missed a major match at Queen's Park, he turned to coaching and looking after a family of nine children which he did with increasing difficulty but without complaint. Tony Cozier, Wisden Cricket Monthly, 2003
