Scotland and Ireland miss out

Posted 1 week ago in Ireland

Although the ECB has told Cricinfo that no plans have been made to identify the two additional sides joining the 18 first-class counties in the new EPL, Scotland chief executive Roddy Smith had said that he does not expect his side to be one of them.

It is widely believed that one slot will be filled by a team belonging to Allen Stanford, as part of his recent multi-million pound deal with the ECB. Despite media speculation that the other could come from Australia, county sources have indicated to Cricinfo that they believe the second side could come from the IPL for commercial reasons, assuming some deal could be agreed with the BCCI.

"Ourselves and Ireland both applied to the ECB about being involved in the EPL but were unsuccessful in doing so," Smith told The Scotsman. "For us it wasn't to be, which is fair enough. The ECB are under no obligation to do anything for us."

Rochdale to host Kenya

Posted 1 week ago in Kenya

A Rochdale-based community group, Sports for All, is hosting a reception for Kenya on Saturday, followed by a match on Sunday.

The match forms part of Kenya's European tour, in which they are to play in the ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers in Belfast.

"We have made this a free event to encourage families and young people to attend. It is a unique opportunity for those who enjoy cricket, to watch an international team play in their town,” Mohammed Nazir, the chairman of Sports for All, said. “However, we also hope to have encouraged young people to attend and enjoy several events.”

Portfolio holder for community cohesion, Councillor Mohammad Sharif has also pledged his support for the event.

"It is not often a national cricket team visits Rochdale,” Councillor Mohammad Sharif said. “Our town has a beacon status for community cohesion and it is therefore a great privilege to have the national team of Kenya visiting Rochdale. I hope the weather is good and we enjoy not only excellent cricket but our young people enjoy a fun day out too."

Rochdale Cricket Club have also organised an international XI to play Kenya in a 50-over match.

Only one winner in county v country debate

Posted 1 week, 1 day ago in Associates

Eoin Morgan: only one winner when it came to club or country © Getty Images

A common gripe that keeps cropping up, especially where Ireland are concerned, is the number of players who are unavailable for matches because of their commitments in English county cricket.

In his column in the Sunday Tribune this week, Ger Higgins highlighted the problem, laying the blame at the door of the ECB.

"There is ample evidence that Irish cricket is being systematically plundered by English counties," he wrote. "The fact that there are a dozen-odd players attached to counties wouldn't be much of a problem if they played fair about player release. But they don't: already this season Morgan, Niall O'Brien and William Porterfield have "opted" to play for their employers ahead of their country. Even an ICC regulation that players must be released for ODIs failed to prise that trio from the clutches of the counties. And it is a similar story with Scots players.

"It is about time that the ECB showed some leadership and told the counties to allow their Irishmen and Scotsmen to play internationals. A FIFA-style regulation could be introduced where a player who is not released must not play for the club on any of the days of the Irish game."

France upset Netherlands

Posted 1 week, 1 day ago in France

France finished their short tour of Holland with an encouraging six-wicket win over a Netherlands side containing three players who recently took part in the Intercontinental Cup.

In the first game, shortened to 35-overs a side because of rain, Netherlands A won by 20 runs after posting 158 for 8. But the result meant they strengthened their side for the second match

After a steady but slow start Netherlands were 112 for 0 after 30 overs. France came back through Jon Houghton (3 for 49) and Tahir Mohammed (4 for 23, including three wickets in an over) and Netherlands were bowled out for 178 with four overs to go.

A couple of steady partnerships and a solid 62 from opener Arun Ayyavooraju, aided by some lusty blows from Shahid Malik (35) and captain Waseem Bhatti (32*), saw France home with 10 overs to spare.

Hurricane strands Scotland in Bermuda

Posted 1 week, 2 days ago in Scotland

Scotland will have little time to prepare for their Intercontinental Cup clash with Canada after they were stranded in Bermuda by the after-effects of Hurricane Bertha.

The storm had been expected to disrupt their game with Bermuda but as it happened the match was unaffected. But it hit the region afterwards, leaving the Scottish players stranded in their hotel rooms.

“The airport in Hamilton was shut down and the squad were unable to make their connection to Toronto,” Cricket Scotland chief executive Roddy Smith said. “The guys were confined to their rooms all day to escape the worst of the wind and heavy rain.

"We were given the option of delaying the start of the Canada match by 24 hours, but we decided against that because of the tight schedule next week when the lads go to Belfast for the European Championships."

Scotland will have less than a day to acclimitise to conditions which are far removed from those experienced in Bermuda as the match in Toronto starts on July 16.

Israelis 'would make great cricketers' - Rhodes

Now in Israel as part of a unique Israel team with several Jewish cricketers, Jonty Rhodes says he's excited by the talent in a country with no cricket culture. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, he says the book Exodus by Leon Uris really drew him to the country.

"My knowledge of Israel comes from the 'Exodus' and how tenacious and determined the people here are to have transformed the desert into this thriving economy. It's genius, and the people here are tenacious to be able to make a living in a really harsh environment."

Peru off to Brazil in October

Posted 1 week, 4 days ago in Peru

From ICC Americas' June 2008 newsletter

The Peru Cricket Federation (PCF) held its AGM on June 6 at Lima Cricket & Football Club and we were delighted to have the region’s ICC Development Officer, Grant Dugmore, in attendance.

After the usual administrative items, he presented Peru Captain Harry Hildebrand with his Volunteer of the Year award. During the AGM, we were able to reflect on an eventful and productive first year as an ICC affiliated cricketing nation, with particular highlights being the ICC Americas Division 3 Championship in Buenos Aires, featuring Peru’s first international victory and the highly successful inaugural Twenty20 Championship played between four local teams.

There was of course lots of talk of continuing development, to build on these foundations. Grant held a seminar for the new PCF Committee on the morning of June 7th to outline ICC fund allocation, use and accounting. With this in mind, we are putting together a proposal for ICC assistance in the construction of cricket nets at Biram Bingham School, Lima, with the goal of providing much needed extra practice facilities and kickstarting schools cricket. Cricket has been reintroduced to two English language schools in Lima, Markham and Cambridge colleges, and a competitive match between them is in the pipeline.

In the realm of adult cricket, the PCF is hopeful of sending a team to play in Curitiba, Brazil in October 2008. They are also looking forward to hosting the Hollywood Golden Oldies team in March 2009.

Speight delighted to have 38 new bosses in a day

Posted 2 weeks, 2 days ago in Bermuda

Bermuda’s executive director, Neil Speight, has been elected to the ICC's executive board for a two-year term. The board is responsible for managing the affairs of the ICC, with the prime aim of advancing the objectives of the ICC.

The board is made up of a representative of each Full Member country and three representatives elected by the Associate Members - Samir Inamder (Kenya), Imran Khwaja (Singapore), and Neil Speight (Bermuda).

Speight said: "It is a great responsibility and humbling honour to be elected to the Executive Board. It is not often that in one day a person gets 38 new bosses, but today I join Samir and Imran irepresenting the 33 Associate and 58 Affiliate countries on the Executive Board.

“I believe that this elevation is in part a reflection of the esteem that Bermuda is now held in world cricket. We participated at the World Cup, the Under-19s got to the World Cup, the ladies qualified for the World Cup qualifier and the BCB were just awarded the Global Best Overall Development Program.

“I feel the honour for this appointment should be placed at the grounds of the men that have brought Bermuda cricket to where it is today - Alma Champ Hunt, Edward P Bailey, Hon. Elvin G James and Reginald Pearman. These men are the true leaders and visionaries in our sport and I am privileged to have had the opportunity to work with the three of them."

"The third associate will come through the qualifiers in August this year," Samir Inamdar, the chairman of the ICC's Affiliates and Associates, told Cricinfo. "I have had a conversation with Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, who has agreed that it is logical to replace Zimbabwe with an Associate."

Vora appointed NPCA chairman

Posted 3 weeks, 2 days ago in Kenya

Almost three years late, the Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association has finally elected a new board, paving the way for the overdue Cricket Kenya elections.

The NPCA saga has blighted Kenyan cricket for several years with a virtually dysfunctional board failing to holding meetings or produce accounts. The failure to implement a new constitution, as agreed back in 2005, led to a postponement in national elections. The new NPCA executive now has 60 days to put their house in order.

Bipin Vora won the vote to become the new chairman by 29-19, while other officials appointed include: Nilesh Lakhani (vice-chairman), John Moyi (secretary), Harshes Patel (assistant secretary), Kalpesh Solanki (treasurer), Shashikant Sanghani (assistant treasurer), Shahid Bwibo (fixtures secretary), and Michael Kibe (assistant fixtures secretary). The committee is completed by Rajesh Patel, Seiffudin Maloo, Oduor Ambala and Sheikh Najani.

Rumours that former KCA chairman Sharad Ghai would mount a comeback bid amounted to nothing. He did not even attend the meeting.

Rwanda frustrated by exams

Posted 3 weeks, 5 days ago in Rwanda

Rwanda’s Under-17 manager Emma Byiringiro has expressed frustration about the team’s preparations ahead of next month’s ICC/ACA U-17 tournament. The New Times quoted Byiringiro as saying: “It’s very difficult to have the boys during the course of the week because they are busy doing their exams. So this has limited us to weekends, which is not enough time for them to perfect their game.”

Despite facing Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, Byiringiro was upbeat. “Kenya and Uganda are favorites but we shall give them a good run for their money. But more certainly, we shall target to beat Tanzania. They are ICC Associate members but we humiliated them during last year’s ICC U-15 regional tournament and we are looking to do it again with the U-17s this year,”

The tournament is being held from July 1 to 5 in Kampala.

Weakened Scotland head west

Posted 4 weeks, 1 day ago in ICC Intercontinental Cup

Scotland will travel to Bermuda and Canada next month without several front-line players who are being rested for other matches later in the summer.

Scotland captain Ryan Watson, along with Gavin Hamilton, Craig Wright, Glenn Rogers and John Blain, have not been included in the 13-man squad which will play Intercontinental Cup matches in Bermuda (July 10-13) and Canada (July 16-19).

But, after discussions with the selectors, they will leave behind a group of experienced players who are being ‘rested’ in preparation for other major matches later in July and August.

“Although Scotland cannot now hope to win the Cup itself, we will certainly take these matches seriously, and the players know that they represent an excellent platform for their talents,” Peter Steindl, Scotland’s coach, said. “For our own ranking in the global game, we aim to win both matches."

Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, added: "It is vital that we build strength in depth among our international squads - particularly with next year’s World Cup qualifying tournament in mind."

Scotland squad Fraser Watts (capt), Richie Berrington, Dewald Nel, Sean Weeraratna, Gordon Drummond, Gordon Goudie, Dougie Lockhart, Majid Haq, Ross Lyons, Qasim Sheikh, Neil McCallum, Gregor Maiden, Colin Smith (wkt).
