Date-stamped : 21 May94 - 02:24 Pakistan vs WI Under-23 XI, St George, Grenada, 10-12 Apr 94 Pakistan won by 111 runs The match was nearly cancelled. 36 hours before it began, four of the touring team, including captain Wasim Akram, were arrested and charged with constructive possession of marijuana. They were on bail throughout the match, though the charges were dropped the night it finished. Three of the accused men played, but their indignation was not betrayed in their performance. The tourist`s determination to win was clear when Wasim declared on the first day with only two wickets lost. The Under-23 at- tack made a hos- tile start, but Shakeel Ahmed and Asif Mujtaba profited from dropped chances to make centuries. After open- ing briskly and forcefully, the U23s were undermined by the spin of Mushtaq Ahmed, carrying a back injury, and the slow left-armer Nadeem Khan. Rearranging their batting order, the Pakistanis increased their lead to 321 and gave themselves just under five hours to bowl out the Under-23s on a sound pitch. They demolished them with 75 minutes to spare, again relying on spin: Mushtaq took three wickets in just six overs and Aamir Sohail, with five for 50, finished the game.
