County Championship Hussey century defies Hampshire July 17, 2006
Division One 4th day A magnificent, unbeaten 150 from David Hussey guided Nottinghamshire to an impressive draw against Hampshire at Trent Bridge. For once, Shane Warne couldn't work his magic and finished with 1 for 92 in 24 overs and will possibly be rueing his call not to enforce the follow-on yesterday. However, during the first session Hampshire were on track as Nottinghamshire slumped to 33 for 3. But Hussey and David Alleyne - dropped on 6 by Nic Pothas - then added 239 before Warne snared Alleyne for 99. Mark Ealham stepped in to partner Hussey through the final hour as Hampshire lost ground on the Championship leaders, Sussex. A fine hundred from Nick Compton, his third first-class ton, led Middlesex to declare on 280 for 4 as their match petered out into a draw against Warwickshire on the final day at Edgbaston. The declaration came on the stroke of Compton's hundred, who had earlier been partnered by Scott Styris who smacked a quick 80 from 95 balls. This left Warwickshire a massive 336 for victory and, like Pakistan in the Test against England at Lord's, they didn't even contemplate going for the win. They ended on 154 for 4, with two wickets for Jamie Dalrymple. Middlesex took 12 points and Warwickshire earned 9.
Division Two 4th day A superb spell of bowling from Graham Wagg, the 23-year-old left-armer, blew Somerset away as Derbyshire romped to a comprehensive 344-run win at Taunton. After Justin Langer and Matthew Wood put on 46 for the opening stand, Wagg blitzed through Somerset's batsmen picking up 6 for 38. There were five catches for the wicketkeeper James Pipe, too, as Wagg's six wickets came in just 47 balls for 24 runs. Surrey were made to work harder than expected but still wrapped up a convincing 299-run win over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. Starting the day on a hopeless 97 for 6, Lance Klusener and Ben Phillips kept Surrey at bay with fighting half-centuries. Klusener fell to Ian Salisbury for 58 and Phillips for 52 to Rikki Clarke. The last wicket added 42 before Salisbury sealed the win with his third wicket as Surrey consolidated top spot in the second division. Glamorgan were given a scare by Leicestershire at Cardiff before holding on for draw seven down. After batting positively, Leicestershire set a target of 340 and their bowlers made immediate inroads. When David Hemp fell Glamorgan were 36 for 4 but the middle order showed more backbone. Richard Grant batted for nearly two hours before Alex Wharf secured the draw in more positive fashion with a 29-ball 33. HD Ackerman's fine match with the bat continued as he followed his first-innings 309 with 62 off 78 balls, while Darren Robinson hit 90 before the declaration and the unexpectedly exciting finish. © Cricinfo
