Yorkshire v Warwickshire, Scarborough, 1st day

Hoggard swings it Yorkshire's way

John Ward at Scarborough

August 22, 2007

Yorkshire 25 for 0 (Gale 17*, Vaughan 5*) trail Warwickshire 129 (Hoggard 4-33) by 104 runs
Scorecard

Several weeks have passed since Yorkshire, erstwhile championship leaders, enjoyed a really good day in the competition, but here at the Scarborough Festival they finished their opening day against Warwickshire apparently well on top. The real proof of the pudding, though, will be apparent as the course of their first innings develops.

Warwickshire's captain Darren Maddy no doubt regretted his decision to bat on winning the toss; it may have been a good toss to lose. The day was cloudy and miserable, dry but with a strong cold north wind. The conditions did not deter a crowd of almost three thousand from attending.

Darren Gough, as Yorkshire captain and with almost 37 years behind him, chose to bowl with the wind and, despite finding direction difficult at times, bowled his opening spell of seven overs for five runs. Matthew Hoggard, toiling into the teeth of the wind, struck two decisive blows in his first over, when there were only four leg-byes on the board. Maddy edged his fourth ball to Yorkshire's debutant, name of Inzamam-ul-Haq, at second slip, and two balls later Kumar Sangakkara edged a straight-forward catch to the wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy.

The two quick bowlers gave Michael Powell and Jim Troughton a torrid time, frequently beating them, and so hard did they find runs to come by that it was an hour before the first boundary came off the bat - and that was an edge through the slips. Then both fell in quick succession, and Warwickshire slumped to 47 for 6 before lunch.

Alex Loudon (33) and Heath Streak (24) fought back with determination, and their seventh-wicket stand of 34 was to be the highest of the innings. The apparently innocuous medium-pace of Anthony McGrath separated them, as he trapped Troughton lbw. Run scoring became a little easier during the afternoon, and a brief flurry by the tail - Alonzo Thomas hit Ajmal Shahzad for three fours in four balls - boosted the total to 129.

Hoggard, who finished off the innings, took four wickets, with two each for Tim Bresnan, Shahzad and McGrath. The pitch was good, the batting for the most part disappointing, and the important factor was the wind, that allowed enough swing - not always well controlled - for the bowling to be difficult. There were six catches taken, four by the keeper and two in the slips.

Yorkshire were playing a new opening pair of Michael Vaughan and Andrew Gale, with the previous incumbents, Craig White and Joe Sayers, omitted after a long run of poor form. They survived two brief periods of play before bad light finally won the day, but didn't find it easy.
