Victoria's hopes of staging the Pura Cup final suffered a big blow as Steve Magoffin deflated the middle order on their way to 7 for 217, which was propped up by Cameron White's late 56 not out. The visitors' chase of Western Australia's 9 for 428 declared started horribly when Nick Jewell and Brad Hodge were dismissed in the first two overs and after the 112-run resistance between David Hussey and Lloyd Mash there was more severe damage as they lost 4 for 22.

Magoffin, who struck with the second ball of the innings to have Jewell lbw, saved his main blast to knock over Mash (30), Hussey and Andrew McDonald for zero in eight balls. The dismissal of Hussey was the worst for Victoria as he had moved freely to 84 in 112 balls when he was caught behind by Luke Ronchi.

Matthew Wade (2) soon followed and Victoria were fortunate their captain White remained till the end. Magoffin went to 33 wickets for the season with his 4 for 57 and will aim to finish off the Bushrangers on day three. It was a dramatic turnaround after Hussey and Mash ensured there was no damage in the second session. Clint McKay chipped in with 20 and Bryce McGain spent 69 deliveries over 8 as they hoped for a miracle.

Western Australia waited until 20 minutes before lunch before closing their innings, with Adam Voges collecting 42 and Brett Dorey 35. McGain, McKay, Allan Wise and Shane Harwood each picked up two wickets before the batting trouble began. Victoria need more points than New South Wales in the remaining two games to have the final at the MCG.
