Warwickshire v West Indies A, Edgbaston, 1st day

Shantry topples West Indies A with five

Cricinfo staff

August 2, 2006

Warwickshire 15 for 0 (Wagh 5*, Westwood 10*) trail West Indies A 235 (Morton 76, Shantry 5-49) by 210 runs
Scorecard

Adam Shantry took five wickets to topple West Indies A on the first day at Edgbaston. Shantry, who has not yet turned 24, returned figures of 5 for 49 in just his sixth first-class match. The debutant Chris Noakes impressed, too. Even younger than Shantry, at 17, he took 2 for 64 from 13 overs as Warwickshire dismissed West Indies for 235. They were 15 without loss in reply at stumps.

West Indies' innings never really got going. Lendl Simmons and Sewnarine Chattergoon both made ducks as West Indies' day got off to a bad start; Naqqash Tahir dismissing Simmons and Shantry removing Chattergoon (2 for 0). Runako Morton set about rescuing things for the visitors, he and Sylvester Joseph (29) put on 72 for the third wicket. But, although he went on to make 76, when he departed, to Timothy Groenewald, West Indies were still in trouble at 130 for 5.

Shantry then worked his way through the tail, with only Daren Powell offering the most resistance of note. He finished unbeaten on 31.

There was a debut, too, for another Warwickshire player, Navdeep Poonia. But the batsman will have to wait until tomorrow to make an impression on this game, as he bats at No 3. The openers Ian Westwood had reached 10 and Mark Wagh was on 5 at the close, completing a decent day for the home side.
