County Championship round-up Shreck puts Nottinghamshire on course May 15, 2008

Nottinghamshire are well placed for victory against Lancashire after bowling them out for 233 in their second innings at Trent Bridge. Events weren't quite as dramatic as the opening day when 20 wickets fell and Tony Pigott, the pitch liaison officer, confirmed there were no concerns over the surface. During the morning session it appeared the batsmen would fight back as Paul Horton and nightwatchman Gary Keedy played out most of the first session, but Nottinghamshire made two breakthroughs before lunch and wickets continued to fall steadily. This time it was Charlie Shreck who did most of the damage with 5 for 40, while first-innings hero Darren Pattinson didn't find wickets so easy to come by. Horton's 37 remained the top score as a number of batsmen made starts before falling. Needing 145, Will Jefferson fell to Sajid Mahmood for a duck - edging to first slip - but it will need another rapid burst of wickets for Lancashire to steal a win. Surrey fought back from a disappointing batting display and sparked a Hampshire collapse at The Rose Bowl. Michael Lumb and Michael Brown took the home side to a healthy 146 for 2, but the impressive Chris Jordan claimed both in the space of a run. Jordan could have had another wicket but Jon Batty couldn't quite get underneath Chris Benham's top-edged hook. Saqlain Mushtaq then weighed in with a brace, including Dimitri Mascarenhas, as Hampshire lost five for 28 and are now facing the prospect of a first-innings deficit even though Ali Brown dropped Greg Lamb before bad light ended the day. Somerset made good use of the play possible between the rain at Taunton to leave Sussex facing a fight to save the match. James Hildreth pushed onto 158 and Peter Trego chipped in with 41 off 40 balls as Somerset declared on 557 for 8. Chris Nash was then removed fourth ball by Charl Willoughby, caught at first slip, but the light closed in to deny the home side a chance of further breakthroughs. Second Division Simon Jones claimed his first Championship five-wicket haul since September 2004 as Worcestershire removed the last four Gloucestershire wickets for 29 runs at New Road. Stephen Snell didn't add to his 127 when he edged Jones behind from the fourth ball of the day and the tail fell swiftly. It continued Jones' promising form after his five-wicket collection in the Friends Provident Trophy against Hampshire, but Worcestershire weren't able to start their reply as the light faded. Gareth Rees and David Hemp struck centuries as Glamorgan moved into the lead against Derbyshire at Sophia Gardens. They added 154 for the second wicket, Rees reaching three figures off 132 balls. He fell to Jake Needham shortly afterwards, but Hemp powered on to his own hundred. Michael Powell passed 10,000 first-class runs during a third-wicket stand of 95. 3rd day Northamptonshire made substantial inroads into Leicestershire's 527 in the 37 overs possible at Grace Road. Riki Wessels fell early in the day and Niall O'Brien only added two to his overnight 76 before being caught behind off Dillon du Preez to leave Northamptonshire wobbling at 157 for 3. However, former captain David Sales and Rob White combined to add an unbroken 119 for the fourth wicket until bad light and rain intervened. © Cricinfo
