 Profile

A farmer by profession, opening batsman Ray Gripper was a regular member of the Rhodesian side for almost 15 years from 1957-58, and had the misfortune to captain them when the side was disintegrating as players moved to South Africa or England to further their careers. He scored a career-best 279 not out for Rhodesia against Orange Free State in 1967-68, which remained a Currie Cup record for many years. He retired in 1971-72 citing business pressures but remained an integral part of Zimbabwean cricket as an administrator. But as the board became increasingly politicised, Gripper stepped down and became an outspoken critic. His son, Trevor, played for Zimbabwe until throwing in his lot with Heath Streak's rebels.
