It is not easy for young spinners making their way in first-class cricket, but Kent's James Tredwell has made steady progress as an off-spinner with considerable batting ability since making his debut in 2001. He made more appearances in limited overs than first-class cricket while he was establishing himself in the Kent side, but by 2003 he was representing the county in both forms of the game on a regular basis. He captained the England Under 19 side and lead Kent Second XI to success in the Second XI Trophy final of 2002 when he scored 111. He has safe hands and the first time he opened the innings in a first-class match he scored fifty against Somerset. His considerable potential elevated him to a place in the ECB National Academy squad for 2003/04, where he found himself captaining the squad in difficult circumstances following the withdrawal of Alex Gidman. His appearances for Kent have been mainly in the one-day arena, and good performances in the summer prompted his elevation to the England Performance Squad in the winter of 2007. He was subsequently rewarded with a call-up to England's one-day squad for their tour of New Zealand in 2008. Sam Collins January 2008
