Profile
Sajith Fernando is one of the 'lost generation' of talented players unable
to break into the Sri Lankan national side during the late 1990s because of
a settled top order and then apparently too old when the selectors opted for
a radical youth policy after the 1999 world cup. A stoutly built and stylish
left-hander, his impressive performances for the Under 24 and the A team
(whom he once captained), especially in South Africa, show just how much an
asset he could have been. His Sri Lankan club, Colts Cricket Club, and UK
club, Werneth Cricket Club, have been the beneficiaries as he has scored
heavily and consistently for both sides. He has also played Grade cricket in
Australia. He is a handy customer with the ball too, with his tight
off-breaks, and is an excellent slip fielder.
