One of Walter Hadlee's five sons, Dayle Hadlee began his career as a fast-medium bowler but persistent back trouble caused him to reduce his pace and rely on swing rather than speed. Eventually his back led to his premature demise from the Test side (he toured England in 1978 but played only one first-class match). In 26 Tests and 11 ODIs he never took a five-for, but his nagging accuracy pegged down many leading batsmen. He made his debut for Central Districts in 1966-67, and in 1969 played in two Tests in England, followed by six on the subcontinent. He subsequently got involved in coaching, overseeing New Zealand's Under-19 side.
