Hemang Badani's patient 48 steered Tamil Nadu to a hard-fought four-wicket win over Assam in a low-scoring tussle at Dharamsala. Assam struggled to 127, after being asked to bat first, and lost out in an additional battle on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy knockout one-day tournament.

Zakaria Zuffri and G Sharma were the only Assam batsmen to make any sort of impression. Tamil Nadu's new-ball pairing of Vijaykumar Yo Mahesh and Tamil Kumaran shared five wickets between them to reduce Assam to 33 for 5. C Ganapathy and R Naresh continued the good work with a couple of wickets apiece. If not for the 37-run stand between Zuffri and Sharma that revived them, Assam would have capitulated much earlier.

Tamil Nadu didn't get off to the most auspicious start with Assam's new-ball bowler Abu Nacheem Ahmed removing both the openers. Ramaswamy Prasanna led the rescue mission with a guarded 20 but it was Badani's stoke-filled 48 that sealed the deal. He cracked four fours and a six in his 71-ball knock and guided his side to their first win of the tournament.
