Ravi Shastri

Australia v India, 3rd Test, Perth, 1st day

India should aim for 350 plus - Ravi Shastri

January 16, 2008

India might have lost crucial wickets at the wrong time of the day. But Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid have put up a good platform. If India score in excess of 350, and bowl and field well, it could turn out to be an exciting contest

It was a superb innings from the master and the cool headed Wall. However we need to capitalize on these contributions and MSD and Pathan need to bat as if their lives depended on this match. A score of 400 is not impossible if the tail wags. Then the pressure would be on the Aussies and they would miss Haydos I guess. Then it is upon the MEN IN BLUE to take it session by session and break Australia.

India should target min. 400 runs in the first innings. To reach that figure, both Dhoni and Pathan should hold on for at least for two sessions. I hope, Kumble can make use of the bouncy pitch.

Anything over 350 is a bonus and gives the bowlers half a chance. The plan for today should be to see the first hour out and then go hell for leather. Like to see dhone get stuck into em. Go for the win boys. You have the runs on board and that the most important thing.

mach, do you really think they can bat all day with 4 wickets left when they lost 4 in one session last night?

I have been watching Indian cricekt for the last 3 yrs. at best Indian bowling for world standards is ordinary and indian bowlers do not have line or length control and lack consistancy. Only bowler who in intelligent to take wickets is Anil Kumble. harbhajan does not have the tricks to take wickets, his dusra is totally ineffective. Indian batting is unreliable and players of high caliber still throw away their wickets via poor shot selection and can't carry the team home. Yuvraj would have been better than jaffer as he could offer bowling option. Harbhajan probable would have been a better choice than both of them. Why doesn't Anil Kumble use Ganguly for as a bowler is beyond me, he has better line and lenth control.

true but the indian innings needs dhoni and pathan to score at least 50 each to help the tailenders make slight controbution so they have at least 410 or over.

Well with Dhoni and phathan who like ball coming on to bat and with their good records they should work out the initial overs tomorrow and then build a steady patnership. They should make aussies demoralise and get a score above 450 or even more. The hype they created with 4 bowlers and tait who says hes going knock out the heads(which is kind of funny and cricinfo commentators betting as well...) did not work well and thought they would get indian under 200.I guess Indians batted well except for their stupid shots ....would be interesting how things go tomorrow....

It's time to wag the tail. India should try and post a score of 425 and with Dhoni at the crease they should be able to do it. From the looks of it, Pathan might not last long but if there are 3 partnerships of 30 to 40 runs each, 425 is achieveable. Dhoni is looking comfortable; he is timing the ball and a couple of patented thumps through the offside were a positive thing to see amidst the harakiri of Laxman and Dravid. I still think that Dinesh Karthik should have been opened instead of Jaffer whose footwork is pathetic against the Australian seam attack.

Guys, its indeed nice to be hopeful of making a high score, just keep in mind that there are only 4 more wickets left, with a dodgy Dhoni and a new comer Pathan with only recognised batters. Kumble might add a dozen or two on his day. The rest of the tail is hopeless. I will be surprised if India gets in excess of 350. My prediction is 330 ao.

If Indian can cross over 350 i guess india has game on hand,as such in absence of Hyden Aussie will struggle to score fast,Ponting is under pressure and i belive he will struggle to score too If Indian blowers bowls well then their is good chances of india to seal its madain victory in Perth This would be very nice replay to high flying aussies
