Ian Chappell

Australia v India, 4th Test, Adelaide, 1st day

Ian Chappell: Laxman must move up

January 24, 2008

Ian Chappell looks back at the first day of the Adelaide Test and says that Rahul Dravid should open with Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman should bat up at number three. Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson bowled brilliantly for Australia, while Matthew Hayden's presence should boost their batting line-up

It may not be a good move to send irfan to send him as an opener. He must be sent at no.7 to support laxman who is good at playing with tail enders. As Dhoni is a wk keeper,he should be groomed as opening bat in tests.Always a wk-keeper can read the pitch and adjust quickly.Thats why Kunderan,F.M.Engineer,gilchrist etc wks are successful openers.Dhoni can play dashingly as well as patiently depending upon pitch condition. As far as Sehawag,he can score runs only when bowlers bowl on his bat.He never understands of feet movement and always vullenarable to swing bowling. He is also not a great learner inspite of great players like Laxman,Tendulkarand Dravid are within the team.On fast tracks Laxman is the only player who is playing consistantly.Selectors selection appears to be influenced by endorsement firms which are now running indian cricket.

Ian i would go with your comment yes Irfan Pathan Should not be exposed too much opening the Batting with a Sort of Pathan Will leave Australians Breathe easily No doubt he is a Good Player who can Frustrate the Australian Bowlers by taking singles and a certain Surprise Boundary but at the top of the order you should have a player who can Pile and take the control of the Innings Sort of Dravid. The Problem Dravid Now face is he is messing with that nagging line bowled by both B.Lee and S.Clarke.Well we can't deny of course he is a Kind of player who settles can rupture the game from you.Dravid and Sehwag at the top of the order is a good Option he can play second fiddle for Sehwag and gradually piling up the innings.Irfan Pathan can be made to Bat at No.7.And coming to LAXMAN he should be played at No 3 the only way to do that is Put Darvid at Slot 1 and Put the Aussie Attack in an Uncertainity..Boy Laxman looks very elegant and Versatile Shots he Plays as if possessed by a Berserk

I can't agree more with IC. Laxman should be at No.3. He wants his freedom at wickets and last thing he needs is to think of tail enders and holding strike. Someone like Ganguly or Dhoni can do that job better than him. I am a bit skeptic about Shastri's view of sending Dravid to open esp. when he's not keen on doing so. Moreover there's a danger of making Sehwag stranded on the other end. However it is probably the best choice India have for the second innings.

Rahul Dravid opening with Virendra Sehwag would be ideal when India opt five specialist bowlers other then allrounder like Irfan Pathan. But the move to send up Irfan is also not bad at all. Irfan Pathan has been tested at the top many times and was successful too. Going by records Irfan has done better at the top then at the lower order. This gives extra strength to batting. Also Rahul Dravid is India's best test batsman and it is not advisable to expose Rahul to new ball pace from likes of Lee, at the start of the innings. Getting Rahul Dravid wicket becomes an psychological advantage to any opposition as the records speaks his value. If India manage to score even 450 by tomorrow then they have bowlers in this test who have ability to strip out Australian batting line up and even the chance of levelling this exciting series. All the best to Team India and famous 5 of Indians in this Test.

first of all i want to thank you for ur GOOD comments for sachin tendulkar. this is a change in ur views for him and its exactly what master deserves. his inning was a really good one. and about bringing laxman up in the order i believe that he has almost got set at that number 5, spot and it will be better to let him continue what he is doing because he is doing a good job there. also dravid finds himself more comfortable batting at number three so there is no need to change the batting order specially at this point when team india is looking for a transition. then sehwag's inning today also need a special mentioning. his presence in the middle is enough to terrorize the bowlers but the bad thing is that india's worry to find a stable opening combination is not yet over.

Every one talks about Dravid opening instead of Pathan. I think the right move would have ben drop Ganguly as well and bring in Karthik. With Karthik and Sehwag, India would have better opening and not put pathan under undue pressure. The fielding would also improve with Karthik. Apart from this Dhoni needs to be under pressure as he has not been performing well and bringing in Karthik puts him on his toes. If that was not possible for political reasons, Pathan ios not a bad move - remember Abid Ali who used to open for India at times? There is lot of hoo haa about Ganguly being dropped from ODI and how his performance might be affected in test due to this. A person with 100 tests under his belt needs to be professional and not selfish and political which we have seen Ganguly to be quite often.

I am surprised that everyone talks about Dravid Opening the innings with Sehwag. But I do feel that as a radical thought, India should have opted for Dinesh Kartik instead of M.Dhoni who is not in a great form so that Kartik can open the innings with Sehwag. It will give the option of retaining the additional (or 5th bowler) as well as solve the issue of opening batsman. Why do we need to sacrifice Dravid instead of thinking of replacing Dhoni who is not in form now and not considered as a serious test contender?

Ian,we can see you are a "paid servant" of STAR Cricket and do not utter a word against India. We all know how much you respect(?) John Buchanan, but the mouth -watering dollars you are getting from Star Cricket prevents you from giving Australia credit where due,and admonishing India where wrong. Sic.

Ian Chappell would have noted that Irfan Pathan has already scored a test century and I feel he is capable of scoring one in any batting position. Great for the incomporable SRT to score a century at the home ground of the Great Don.
