West Indies A v Sri Lanka A, 2nd Test, 2nd day Honours even after West Indies strike late December 2, 2006
Sri Lanka A 202 for 4 (Udawatte 76, Gunawardene 55, Samaraweera 51*) trail West Indies A 358 (Rampaul 64, Bandara 4-100) by 156 runs Mahela Udawatte, Avishka Gunawardene and captain Thilan Samaraweera all chipped in with half-centuries as Sri Lanka A, in reply to West Indies A's 358, reached 202 for 4 at the close of the second day at the Warner Park Stadium. On a see-saw day, the last three West Indian batsmen added 84 to extend their total before Sri Lanka A made a solid start, only to lose two wickets just before stumps. In ideal batting conditions, Udawatte and Gunawardene, the openers, hit 76 and 55 in an opening stand of 103. Both opened up after the lunch interval, especially Gunawardene, who struck seven boundaries in his 77-ball innings. Ryan Hinds, the left-arm spinner, removed him leg before to end the stand, and Darren Sammy's medium pace accounted for Malintha Warnapura to leave Sri Lanka A at 106 for 2. Joined by Samaraweera, Udawatte added a further 85 to steady the ship, but West Indies A came back late in the day with two wickets. Samaraweera, with the experience of 39 Tests, hung on to finish the day unbeaten on 51 from 108 balls and 145 minutes. Earlier, Ravi Rampaul helped his side from an overnight 274 for 8 to 358 with a crucial 61-ball 64, with four fours and four sixes. For the tourists, Malinga Bandara picked up 4 for 100 and Nuwan Kulasekera 3 for 38. © Cricinfo
