The accolade of Wisden Cricketer of the Year is thought to be the oldest individual award in cricket. It started in 1889, when the Almanack included details of Six Great Bowlers of the Year. The following year Nine Great Batsmen were named. Things settled down into the current format in 1897.
In 1916 and 1917 there were no awards made, and in 1918 Five School Bowlers of the Year were chosen with Five Public School Cricketers in 1919. In 1926 only one man - Jack Hobbs - was honoured, and again there were no awards between 1941 and 1946.
The choice of the Famous Five is made solely by the Almanack editor. No player can be chosen twice. Until recently the selection was made on the basis of the previous English season, but this lapsed in 1997 when Sanath Jayasuriya was chosen after his exploits in the 1996 World Cup. Now the choice is more global, although it is still primarily given for performances covered in that year's Almanack. Thus the Five for 2003 were chosen in January 2003, before the World Cup, on the basis of performances from Sept 2001 to Sept 2002. In 2005, Matthew Engel again reverted to chosing based on performances during the previous English summer, and for the first time since 1960 all five choices were English.
