England v India, 2nd women's Test, Taunton, 4th day

India women take Test series at Taunton

Cricinfo staff

September 1, 2006

India 307 and 98 for 5 (Jain 34) beat England 99 and 305 (Edwards 105, Atkins 68, Goswami 5-45) by five wickets
Scorecard

Two Tests, two fights to the death: women's cricket doesn't get any more exciting. Last time out it was India battling to save the draw, this time they were battling to win - and they fell over the line just in the nick of time to take the match, and with it the series.

Jhulan Goswami took her second five-wicket haul of the match, to end with very tidy match-figures of 10 for 78, and leave India just 98 for the series victory. They got there with five wickets to spare, Karu Jain (34) and Mithali Raj (22*) leading the charge.

By lunch at Taunton, England were firmly on the rack, with six down and a lead of just 54. India were already scenting victory to avenge their whitewash in the one-dayers. After their valiant efforts to stave off defeat yesterday, Charlotte Edwards and Caroline Atkins both fell early, their mammoth third-wicket stand of 178 coming to a head when Edwards was dismissed by Goswami.

Much then rested on the shoulders of Atkins, but she followed shortly after to Amita Sharma. But it was Goswami who really threatened, cleaning up Jenny Gunn, Laura Marsh and Isa Guha to complete her five-wicket haul. Nooshin Al-Khader joined in on the act, removing Sarah Taylor for a quickfire 23 - Taylor edging through to Jain - then Beth Morgan and Jane Smit.
